This “conference-in-a-conference” is embedded within our exciting 2013 annual conference. Each registrant will receive eight hours of intensive professional development, engaging in conversation and hands-on activity around best practices to develop students’ argumentative reading and writing skills across disciplines. Participants will emerge with a deeper understanding of the Common Core State Standards and with practical tools for implementing appropriate instructional shifts in the classroom.
✦Three separate “strands” are for elementary school teachers or for teams of secondary level History-Social Studies and English-Language Arts teachers. Choose one of three presenting groups, each with long experience and an outstanding track record such collaborative work. All are prepared to continue this work upon request by individual or consortia of districts or schools. Strand B is waiting room only as of February 11, 2013. Strand A is waiting room only as of February 28, 2013.

Argumentative writing: students identifying effective argumentation (claim/evidence/reasoning) within historical texts and using historical knowledge, evidence and reasoning to develop thoughtful, coherent historical essays. |
Presentation/discussion based on Oakland USD history and ELA teachers’ collaborative efforts to implement the Common Core History and ELA Reading and Writing Standards supporting argumentative writing.
We will closely examine student thinking and writing generated through collaborative lesson study addressing the following question: What instructional practices best support students in developing the reading and writing skills necessary to write thoughtful and coherent historical essays in both history and ELA classrooms? Insights drawn and questions arising from study around this question will be shared. Participants will leave with an appreciation of how the demands of the Common Core overlap between the two disciplines and how they diverge, and with concrete strategies and resources to be used in history and ELA classes separately and in collaboration.
