Acclaimed author Sonia Nazario will give a talk about her book Enrique's Journey,  a story of a Honduran boy’s struggle to find his mother in the U.S., which won more than a dozen awards, among them the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing.  This seminal work is used in classrooms around the nation by Social Studies and English teachers as a rich source to examine the complexities of the illegal immigration debate.

Gerda Weissmann Klein
Celebrated Author,  Holocaust Survivor

CCSS is excited to announce that Gerda Weissmann Klein will be a featured speaker during our 2012 annual conference. Ms. Klein is a celebrated author, Holocaust survivor, proud naturalized citizen and 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. In 2008 she founded Citizenship Counts, a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate today’s youth on the tenets of citizenship, encourage them to appreciate their rights and responsibilities as Americans, and give them an opportunity to celebrate their citizenship by hosting a naturalization ceremony or participating in a service learning project.

For over six decades, author, historian, and speaker Gerda Weissmann Klein has captivated audiences worldwide with her powerful message of hope, inspiration, love and humanity. In her speeches and books, she draws from her wealth of life experiences: from surviving the Holocaust and meeting her future husband on the day of her liberation, to her journey to the United States, accepting an Oscar and Emmy for a documentary based on her life, and her constant fight to promote tolerance, encourage community service and combat hunger.

Learning and Leading: Collaborating with Colleagues to Go Beyond “Just Good Teaching” with English Learners

Collaborating with colleagues both within and outside our own teaching contexts helps us all move beyond what deJong & Harper describe as “just good teaching.”  By understanding the specific linguistic and academic needs of English learners (ELs), we can work with other social studies experts as well as language specialists to help ELs learn both content as well as develop English language proficiency. However, in order for everyone to benefit, there has to be a willingness for all professionals involved to be both learners and leaders. Several examples of effective collaborations will be shared.

Guardians of Democracy: Restoring the Civic Mission of Schools

The need to educate each generation about their rights and responsibilities as citizens in our democracy was a principle reason for the establishment of a system of public education in the United States. In recent years, preparation for informed and engaged citizenship has taken a back seat to preparation for college and career. Increasingly, concerned policymakers and citizens are taking note and fighting to restore the essential civic mission of our schools. California Court of Appeals Justice Judith McConnell and National Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools Executive Director Ted McConnell will discuss the latest research and efforts to inspire our work to put the 'third C,' for Civic Learning back into the priorities of education along with preparation for College and Career.
