Vision for the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Inquiry in Social Studies State Standards

The Vision for the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Inquiry in Social Studies State Standards aims to provide guidance to state education agencies as they upgrade existing standards to meet the practical goal of preparing young people for effective and successful participation in college, career, and civic life. A state-led effort facilitated by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) with commitment and support from a wide range of stakeholders, it comes at a watershed moment in social studies education, and will provide disciplinary guidance to support states in upgrading their social studies standards to include inquiry, civic readiness and clear alignment to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy.

Kathy Swan, Project Director and Lead Writer for the C3 Framework on behalf of the CCSSO, will discuss: the vision for the Framework; the partnership of states, professional organizations, researchers, scholars, writers and teachers involved in the effort; the Framework writing process; and the next steps for the project as the document moves towards publication.

With the adoption of new standards for English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science, it is time for California to update its Social Studies standards as well. Dr. Michelle Herczog will examine how the Framework can be used to help California move forward in this endeavor.
