Local Roots, Global Reach
The 2026 California Council for the Social Studies (CCSS) conference theme, Local Roots, Global Reach, invites educators to explore the vital connection between community-based learning and global responsibility. In a time of emerging global challenges and constant change, social studies classrooms play a critical role in helping students understand the world around them and take informed action—beginning with their local communities.
This theme recognizes that powerful social studies instruction starts with the local: the histories, cultures, and issues of our neighborhoods, cities, and states. When students investigate their local context—whether through civic engagement, oral histories, place-based inquiry, or regional case studies—they build a foundation of relevance and connection. These "local roots" are the entry point to broader inquiry, helping students see how their experiences and communities intersect with national and global systems.
Exploring local roots prepares teachers and students for extending learning outward to examine global reach of policy and action. Students are empowered to grapple with global issues such as climate change, migration, human rights, economic interdependence, and democratic participation. Through critical thinking, historical analysis, and cross-cultural understanding, students develop the knowledge and skills to become active participants in an interconnected world.
Whether you're teaching kindergarteners about community helpers or high schoolers about international relations, this theme celebrates the full K–12 spectrum of social studies education. Join us as we share strategies, stories, and resources that help students root deeply in their local identities while reaching for a more just and informed global future.
