Don Powell is in his 5th year as an administrator for Instructional Services at the Riverside County Office of Education where he works with districts, schools and teachers to improve History Social Science Instruction. Don's career began as an HSS and AVID teacher in the high desert. He valiantly served the light for over ten years before succumbing to the darkside. He served as a site administrator for three years before his current gig with RCOE. When Don’s not working he can be found playing all manner of board and video games with his two boys and girlfriend.
History Social Science education must be a priority for schools because it is the bedrock for creating an informed citizenry. Thomas Jefferson opined, “An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.” An informed citizenry is at the heart of the foundation of an American Democracy. The tools our students learn in all areas of academics find themselves being utilized to help shape policy in classrooms, schools, cities, counties and states all throughout this country. I am dedicated to helping our teachers and school administrators implement engaging HSS curriculum in the classroom for the express purpose of creating an informed citizen that will engage civically.
