Dear Colleagues,

It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our friend, colleague, and mentor, Dr. Scott Petri.

Scott was not only an extraordinary educator—he was a passionate advocate for civic engagement, a tireless innovator, and a generous mentor to thousands. Since beginning his journey with LAUSD in 2003, Scott dedicated his life to inspiring students and empowering teachers. At John F. Kennedy High School, and throughout every chapter of his career, he left a mark that is hard to put into words. His students thrived under his guidance—whether winning state debate championships or discovering their voice in a civil conversation—and his colleagues looked to him for wisdom, encouragement, and leadership.

Scott’s accomplishments were numerous: a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, professional development delivered to over 10,000 educators, national presentations, published research, and classroom strategies that transformed teaching across California and beyond. But perhaps more powerful than any award or title was the way he made people feel—valued, heard, and capable of growth.

Those of us who worked alongside Scott knew the depth of his compassion, the sharpness of his intellect, and his relentless pursuit of excellence—not for recognition, but for the students who depended on him. He believed in public education as a force for good, and he lived that belief every single day.

Scott was a light in our community. As the California Council for the Social Studies President Elect, we will miss his leadership, remaining grateful for his years of service.  His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy lives on in every student he inspired, every teacher he mentored, and every classroom he helped shape.

We will share more information as we receive it, including any opportunities to honor his life and memory. In the meantime, please keep his family and loved ones in your hearts. And if you are struggling with this loss, know you are not alone—we mourn together, as a community touched by an extraordinary life.

With deepest sympathy,

Rebecca Valbuena
